Wouldn’t you think having six legs is advantage enough?  On my Gmail news ticker:

Ed Furlong

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

My office is next door to the training center where new employees learn about our school, autism, and so on.  I often overhear parts of the training, including a video that Joy, the trainer, plays for everyone.

Today I was leaving to do something when I heard Joy say, “Here’s a list of people who are good to know at Giant Steps.”  I rushed back over and poked my head in, to see if I made the list.

I had made the list, but something wasn’t right.  Joy noticed me and said, “Oh, and here’s Ed!”

Said I:  That’s not my name!

Joy looked up and saw “Ed Furlong, Facilities Manager.”  We had a good laugh, and she promised to correct my name later.

Ed Furlong - Marcy must be telling stories about me again.

Figure Skating

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I’ve watched about a dozen figure skating numbers in the past day or two.  A few observations:

- The athleticism required to skate backwards eludes me.  How anyone finds the coordination to spin three or four times in the air and land cleanly is incredible to me.

- The announcers drive me crazy.

1. They have such an eye for details that they’re saying, “Oh, that’s too bad…” when I’m thinking, “Wow, that’s really good.”  I don’t believe I’ll ever watch enough figure skating to see what they’re seeing.

2. However, they are foolish, I think, to lead into every jump with, “If he can just get past this TRIPLE AXLE…”  What is this?  Why can’t we enjoy a jump instead of fearing a fall?

- On the ice, the costumes aren’t too bad.  Off the ice, when they’re waiting for their scores…ridiculous.  They could do well to learn from boxers, and put a robe on.

- Some of the costumes are bad no matter where the skater is.

- Bob Costas appears to have passing knowledge of figure skating.  This man is full of surprises.

Quotable TV

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I don’t watch a lot of TV.  Consider the opportunistic timing of these two quotes…

Stephen Colbert at the Grammys - “There are always duets you don’t expect at the Grammys.  We just saw Lady Gaga and Elton John.  Elton John and Eminem were on stage together a few years ago.  You know who I’d like to see on stage together?  Adam Lambert and any sense of personal restraint.”

And not as deliberate, though still funny:  Miggy, on “The Biggest Loser,” after a sequence of her struggling in the gym - “I’m going to give it all I got.  Then I’m going to give it all I don’t got.”
