Figure Skating
I’ve watched about a dozen figure skating numbers in the past day or two. A few observations:
- The athleticism required to skate backwards eludes me. How anyone finds the coordination to spin three or four times in the air and land cleanly is incredible to me.
- The announcers drive me crazy.
1. They have such an eye for details that they’re saying, “Oh, that’s too bad…” when I’m thinking, “Wow, that’s really good.” I don’t believe I’ll ever watch enough figure skating to see what they’re seeing.
2. However, they are foolish, I think, to lead into every jump with, “If he can just get past this TRIPLE AXLE…” What is this? Why can’t we enjoy a jump instead of fearing a fall?
- On the ice, the costumes aren’t too bad. Off the ice, when they’re waiting for their scores…ridiculous. They could do well to learn from boxers, and put a robe on.
- Some of the costumes are bad no matter where the skater is.
- Bob Costas appears to have passing knowledge of figure skating. This man is full of surprises.

I’m with Colbert concerning Bob Costas.
