Wisconsin Dells

Friday, August 1st, 2008

One of my best non-sexual experiences alone with a woman…Is how I’d describe it…

But don’t get your hopes up; I don’t think it’s working out.

Me and the family went on our yearly trip to the Wisconsin Dells. We usually stay on Lake Delton, and this year was no different, except for the fact that Lake Delton is now empty. The Man-made lake flooded a few months ago which put too much pressure on a stretch of land separating the lake from a river which has a lower elevation. WOOPS! The land feel apart into the river below and drained the lake. So, it’s weird to see a muddy/sandy/wet bowl instead of a lake, but we were able to go to nearby rivers to get our fishing, skiing, and boating fixes in.

I didn’t want to go to Noah’s Ark this year, so I had an afternoon to myself. I checked out a rock climbing place to see what type of experience it’d be, the cost, and whether I could do it in the 4 hours I had to spare. A cute 19 yr old girl of native-american decent gave me the details.

I’d have to wait for the owner to get back from a kayaking expedition to see if someone was able to watch the shop for her, so she could take me out on a climb personally.

WHAT!? Wait, What?

Rocks and Chicks…glorious.

So, while waiting for Easton, we talked a lot about climbing. Equipment, experiences, fascinations with climbing, experience level…She even showed me the basement where they store their winter gear for skiing/snowboarding/snowshoeing…And she wasn’t trying to sell me things, we were RELATING!

Holy shit! This girl understands my words? I understand what she’s saying… VERY ODD.

So, Easton comes back. She has a conversation with him, suggesting that she herself can take me on a climb. He gives her a look that said, “I understand what you’re doing here.” (Or atleast that’s how I perceived it…) But there wasn’t a way to fit me in on that day unless I wanted to piggyback with another group, but they were on a beginner difficulty, which I didn’t want to do. It was also gonna cost me a good bit of money since I was not part of a group. $120 for four hours. $120 for a sweet climb? Yeah, maybe. $120 for a sweet climb with a cute and interesting girl be-laying me? Sold.

They were able to fit me in on the next day if I was willing to meet them at the climb location, rather than being driven by them. I booked it and told my sister I wouldn’t be going to a go-kart/water park/theme park with her as planned.

I show up at the climb the next day only expecting a sweet climbing experience, and I got it. I did 5 climbs on real rock faces with real climbing shoes. They were at an intermediate level. Just difficult enough to be challenging for me. The last climb was 100 ft! It never ended. The view over the top of the forest to the Wisconsin River was awesome. And I was struggling at a few parts on this climb. Crazy.

Back to Kate…She greeted me at the start of the day warmly. Throughout the few hours she praised me on my climbing form and, we both enjoyed each other’s company. It wasn’t necessarily flirty, but it was respectful and real. Towards the end, she needed to set up a new climb…the 100 ft. I waited patiently as she did this, perched on a jagged rock. It was a good spot to watch the show. She was going to need to self-repel down the rock face. Ahh…I took it in. Beautiful girl repeling 100 ft…She hopped down, flicked her dark hair back, and smiled.

After the climb, she needed to gather some of the equipment on the top of the climb. She asked if I’d like to hike up there with her. I obliged. Once on top, she jumped over a foot wide gap to get to the equipment on top of the climb. The drop was 100 ft. She offered to let me jump over it also, if I would clip onto a rope. This I did, but stopped before making the jump.

“Come on. Just jump.”
“I’m not scared. I just like to take it all in.”

On top of a forest, standing on a lovely rock, ready to make a jump towards a beautiful woman telling me not to be scared…hmm…yeah.

But I was still not convinced at that point that I was interested in this girl or that she was interested in me. It wasn’t flirty; it was friendly. But having the 8 yr age difference made me tentatively decide to let her make the move to extend the friendship outside of this day. (I never told her my age because she never asked.)

We packed up the equipment and walked back to the cars while talking about various things. Then, nothing, except for a “it was nice to meet you.”

Well, I couldn’t resist the next day. I had her phone number from the directions to the climb, so I texted her to ask if she’d like to keep in touch. She gave me her facebook, and that’s where we stand now. Her casually attitude now has me thinking she’s not interested…perhaps I was only seeing what I wanted to see…

To another climb, Adam!
